Carman Moore is a world-renowned Composer, Conductor, Author, and Music Critic. His works have been performed by the New York Philharmonic and many other major symphony orchestras. Moore has served as music critic and columnist for the Village Voice and has contributed to The New York Times, The Saturday Review of Literature, Vogue, and Essence among others. He is the author of two books: Somebody's Angel Child: The Story of Bessie Smith (Dell), and Rock-It (a music history and theory book for Alfred Music Publishers). From 495: Exit at River Road and proceed east, (towards DC). At the 4th traffic light turn left onto Whittier Blvd. (first traffic light after Wilson 188). There will be a large sign on the corner for the church, immediately followed by a driveway. This driveway is the exit, so you cannot enter. Proceed about 40 feet to the second driveway on the left which is the entrance. The building is in a wooded area, not visible from the street.

From DC: Massachusetts Ave to Western Ave (at Westmoreland Circle) proceed northeast, then left on River Road, right on Whittier Blvd (first traffic light after Goldsboro Road 614). Second left on Whittier is the entrance to the parking lot (the first is the exit).

You can park anywhere in the lot. Walk up the hill to the main entrance of the building (in the middle with several glass doors). Once inside, turn left and follow the signs to the Fellowship Room. You will be walking through a room next to the lobby and continuing down a hall with glass on both sides (it is an indoor bridge over a driveway). At the end of this bridge corridor, the Fellowship Room will be on your right.

WINDOWS AND PAPER, by KATHRYN WILEY: Show dates: May 4-29 2011. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Friday, 1 to 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 12 to 6 pm. The opening reception is Friday, May 6, 6-8 pm; the artist's talk is Saturday, May 21, 2-3 pm.

The May 4-29 2011 solo show at the Foundry Gallery is "Windows and Paper," recent paintings and collages by Kathryn Wiley. In this third solo show at the Foundry, Wiley presents her latest work in the expanded and developed abstract form, as well as collages and representational landscapes. Largely a continuation of the work in her November 2009 show, the paintings feature squares and rectangles occupying the entire picture plane, forming a contained, contemplative space with less movement than before, and more meditation. Some of the paintings resemble weavings, evoking the delicate balance of relationships with friends and family interwoven and coexisting, echoed in the subtleties of similar colors and the absence of extreme lights and darks.

The landscape paintings show the Santa Catalina Mountains outside Tucson, Arizona, and the collages range from almost representational through abstraction to surrealism.

The Gallery hours are Wednesday - Friday, 1 to 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday, 12 to 6 pm. The opening reception is Friday, May 6, 6-8 pm; the artist's talk is Saturday, May 21, 2-3 pm.

City of Baltimore Pre-Qualified Public Artist List
Application Deadline: April 3, 2011

The City of Baltimore, the Baltimore Public Art Commission, and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts is seeking interested artists and/or artist collaborators to submit qualifications for consideration and inclusion in Baltimore’s Pre-Qualified Public Artist List. The pre-qualified list will go into effect upon review and approval of the Public Art Commission and remain in effect for two years. This list will be utilized and referenced for upcoming public art projects under the 1%-for-Public Art Program, most importantly federally funded construction projects requiring artists and/or artist collaborators to work directly with the overall project design firm to incorporate artwork into the plan.

APPLICATION DEADLINE

Applications must be received by April 3, 2011
Applications received after the deadline and those that are found to be incomplete will not be reviewed. It is the responsibility of the submitting artist to ensure that applications are complete and arrive by the deadline. Extensions to this deadline will not be granted under any circumstances.

The Laundromat will feature new works by artists Alexa Hoyer and Walsh Hansen for our first exhibition in the new space on Wyckoff Ave. as part of Beat Night, Bushwick galleries stay open late.

Alexa Hoyer will present drawings, photographs and transcribed texts of conversations she overheard on the subway. She will also direct a performance based on these transcriptions. With the contribution of New York based actor and comedian Jen Kwok, a group of selected actors will be reenacting and reinterpreting these dialogues. In much of her work, Alexa Hoyer is concerned with the idiosyncratic elements of the mundane by highlighting unique quirks of the human experience.

Walsh Hansen will present two videos as well as several related drawings and sculptures. The characters in his videos include people and animals, both live and sculptural which interact in domestic spaces and urban landscapes. His work explores his own human tendency to anthropomorphize a representation in order to satisfy a base need for companionship. For the artist, the futility in this act and the inevitably unfulfilled need for reciprocity is evinced in a kitten’s contempt for its own sweater.

This will be a two day exhibition. The opening reception is Friday February 18th from 7-10PM, and we are open on Saturday the 19th by appointment.

Hansen was born in Missoula, Montana. He is a graduate of the University of Montana and the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, PA. He currently lives in New York City.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Alexa Hoyer holds a BFA from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri and an MFA in sculpture from Tyler School of Art. Hoyer has a permanent video installation at the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, and has also shown her work throughout the US and in Europe.

Dr. Jonathan Katz

Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture

Dr. Jonathan Katz, director of the doctoral program in Visual Studies at the State University of New York Buffalo, and co curator of the “Hide/Seek” Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, will be delivering a lecture at the Foundry Gallery on Saturday January 15, 2011, beginning at 4:00pm. “Hide/Seek” shows works by American portrait artists that deal with sexual non-conformity. Topics include: how artists show their subject’s sexuality affects a portrait as well as how the presentation in art has changed over the last hundred years, as well as how sometimes the people in the portraits, and sometimes the artists themselves, have been forced into creative ways of expressing their identity, in the face of a society that would otherwise exclude them.

The “Hide/Seek” exhibit has received a good deal of notoriety due to the National Portrait Gallery’s decision to pull one of the works of art from the exhibition under pressure.

The nighttime gala will be celebrated in conjunction with our 2nd anniversary party and our winter holiday party! From 5 pm-10 pm, we will enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in a cozy environment, celebrating local artists and their works with the warmth and holiday cheer of the season! Offering holiday shoppers new gift-giving ideas, this exhibit focuses on local artists and artisans. The physical space of the gallery will be transformed into a shopping destination for local residents to purchase one-of-a-kind pieces.

Items will range from pottery to limited edition photograph prints to handcrafted bowls, jewelry, and more! Essential to the show will be diversity in style, uniqueness in subject matter and originality in items. The goal is to transform the gallery into a unique retail shop for the holiday season that specializes in highlighting our local artists’ community, staging it with the flair that only designers and artists can!

To emphasize purchasing local art as gifts, Design Studio Art Gallery is encouraging submissions that are $50 and under. Ideally, 75% of the gallery will be stocked with art pieces at truly affordable price points to encourage multiple sales and help artists to get their work recognized.

Each month, two art students are recognized in “The Bulletin” sidebar of the section with a photo of their artwork and a small description about their achievement. Achievements recognized in this section include scholarships, fellowships, internships, residencies and students who have placed in an art competition. Students eligible for entry in “The Bulletin” should be majoring in fine art, graphic design, architecture, illustration, art history, photography or other art-related curriculum. It is impossible to miss that one of the key elements in Schweitzer�s repertoire is his bold use of the gestural line, which gives the work its vigor and immediacy. Schweitzer uses a variety of media often in combinations, which can include enamel, acrylic, oils, pastel and ink. Schweitzer �builds� his paintings using a layering technique, while constantly rotating the canvas, and ensuring the composition is harmonious, balanced, and engaging. Schweitzer attributes his gestural painting style to the street graffiti of the �80s and its stark contrast to a New England pastoral countryside upbringing. POETRY

The 2010-2011 season of the popular "third Thursday" poetry series
opens on September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Takoma Park auditorium. The

Hubbard will be featured.

On Monday, September 20 the monthly session of Takoma Park Poet
Laureate Anne Becker's Writing a Village poetry workshop will meet at
the Takoma Park Community Center from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Poets of all
levels of experience are welcome to join. Bring a poem and ten copies to
share with the group.

“Square One” is an exhibition that showcases the University of Maryland’s talent through a
variety of media. Curated by two of UMD’s own, the exhibition will highlight the work of six University of Maryland undergraduates, alumni, and faculty. A percentage of each sale will be donated back to the University of Maryland Art Department.
Jay Chmilewski is a photographer from the University of Maryland. He uses photography to explore how our world works and its components. He also uses this media to create his own world, and consequently, make sense of our own.
Erica Federhen is a graphic design student at UMD and her work reflects her academic progress. Her paintings are simple and elegant, using bold color to make simple, but important truths. These works exhibit dynamism, energy, and visual vibrance.

Timothy Horjus received his MFA from the University of Maryland in 2010. He now teaches at UMD and lives in Baltimore. His recent work reinterprets traditional imagery of painted mountains into crisp, angular, geometric forms. Christie Liberatore is a UMD undergrad in the department’s honors program. She was also the recipient of the prestigious CAPA scholarship for the fine arts. Her paintings are expressive and emotional, often exhibiting feelings of nostalgia. Her subject matter is chosen as a result of her family’s foray into the restaurant business.
Kunj Patel is a University of Maryland undergraduate in the honors program as well. He uses prints and collage to explore his artistic worldview, which is greatly influenced by his own interest in anthropology and the human body.

Design Studio Art Gallery and Riggio Design Consultants, a local art gallery and interior design firm, located in the Hyattsville Arts District are looking for student interns. Interns will explore art curation, the exhibition process, marketing and public relations, sales, graphic design, and all aspects of Interior Design.

INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES:

Interns will have the choice of working primarily in art gallery management, interior design, or (preferably) both.

Interns will research themes for upcoming exhibits by researching history, theory, and the community for fun and intriguing exhibits; establish a firm concept and plan for upcoming exhibits; execute sales for artwork; and maintain the gallery space by attending regular hours of operation while cleaning the space and interacting with visitors. Interns will work on how artwork influences space, how to technically work in a gallery space (by patching, painting, and designing/adjusting lighting in a gallery, and more).
Interns will learn about and interact with neighboring businesses, artists, designers, and community activists; advertise the space for upcoming events; investigate products for interior design projects; research art history and design trends; maintain mailing lists, the company websites, social networking websites; and more.

The ideal intern will be willing to explore maintaining a business through advertising, marketing and managing financial needs, inspiring and nurturing art and community interaction, have good design intuition and have basic computer skills in programs such as Microsoft Office products and Adobe products. We are willing to work with and teach each of these skills! The internship is unpaid, may qualify for school credit, and allows each individual to build relations with professional artists, designers, curators, and collectors in the Washington, DC area. Hours per week are flexible. The ideal intern will be able to work at least six hours each week, perhaps be able to come in a full day on the weekend if possible.

With the recent tragedy of the Gulf Oil Disaster, we are once again asked to deal with the
aftermath of this horrible situation and are reminded of the other two disasters of this
decade. We are consistently faced with frustrating circumstances that, in many cases,
could have been prevented. As this decade comes to an end, this exhibit will focus on the
major disasters that occurred. "3:1" will be on exhibit at Design Studio Art Gallery from
August 14th – September 5th, 2010. Design Studio Art Gallery will hold an artists' opening
reception on Sunday, August 22nd from 3-7pm.

HYATTSVILLE, MD (7-29-10) - Our new exhibit: "3:1” (3 Disasters, 1
Decade) examines the three disasters of the past decade: Hurricane
Katrina, the Earthquake in Haiti, and the Gulf Oil Disaster. The three
disasters that have occurred in the past decade elicit frustration, sadness,
disenchantment, and even anger. The damages resulting from Hurricane
Katrina, the Earthquake in Haiti, and the Gulf Oil Disaster could have been
mitigated if basic safety precautions had been implemented. When human
lives are at stake, why is it so difficult to do the right thing? When it comes
to our planet, why do we hesitate and resist change that will result in better
environmental situations? Why do we risk lives, our planet, and our dignity
by allowing deep pockets to dictate our sense of purpose and justify our
course of action? Why is everything so political? This exhibit will examine these issues and reflect various
perceptions by multiple artists.

Works of art will reflect environmental devastation, capture the mood of the moment, serve as a constant
reminder that we are all human and that the aftermath of these tragedies should have been lessened, and
capture the political and social elements that essentially reflect our nature, mold our decisions, and shape
our future. A portion of art sales will be donated to charity.

The House of Musical Traditions @ A.Salon…. Well, for the afternoon, anyway….

Following up on the successful Mick Moloney St Patrick’s Day concert at A.Salon, David Eisner discussed with A.Salon the possibility of holding some banjo workshops in the gallery there, and in the large next-door studio.

So there we were, trooping out of Adam Hurt’s deft negotiation of Cumberland Gap tuning, to witness Cathy Fink sitting in the hallway, legs outstretched, working out a final tune or two with her 11-year old student, Adam Vesserling, as Tony Trischka stood, ears alert, watching the display of careful teaching for which Cathy and her partner, Marcy Marxer, have become known around Takoma Park an the DC area.

No wonder Jim O’Conner, down from Syracuse, NY’s NPR outlet, microphone in hand, was eagerly soaking up snatches of interview and music all around, from Cathy’s just-concluded clawhammer workshop for beginners in the A.Salon Art Gallery (G tuning, 3 chords, and some basic right-hand technique – banjos available for the borrowing). And then Tony’s students trooped into the next studio, assembled in a circle around him, and he walked them carefully through a bluegrass banjo workshop, “playing the syllables” up the neck, syncopation and melodic style, with an emphasis on the Earl Scruggs’ method.

It was a richly satisfying afternoon of workshops, and makes further collaborations between A.Salon and The House of Musical Traditions look all the more plausible. Look out for Tony’s new CD on Smithsonian-Folkways, in which, among other treasures, he plays a duet with Pete Seeger, on “Leatherwing Bat.” Between ol’ Pete and young Adam Vesserling, the banjo traditions appear in good hands for the present – and future. Thanks to Adam Hurt, Cathy Fink, and Tony Trischka for taking time from their busy concertizing and touring schedules to share their skills with a delighted circle – or three – of Takoma Park banjo-pickers.

The ART in Embassies Program promotes the cultural identity of America’s art and artists by borrowing original works of art by U.S.citizens for display in U.S. embassy residences worldwide. Each ART exhibition is developed collaboratively between a United States ambassador and one of our curators. We select both image-based and abstract work in all media.

What is the length of a loan?The length of a loan is approximately two and one-half to three years, which coincides with the average length of an ambassador’s tenure.

Who arranges and pays for shipping and insurance?ART in Embassies hires professional fine art handlers to assemble, pack, crate and safely ship works of art to and from each embassy. ART insures each work during its transit to and from the embassy and while it is on exhibit at the residence.

New Paintings

An exhibition of new surreal paintings by Julio Valdez – a native of the Dominican Republic who draws his sensual inspiration and his palate of rich blues and greens from the sea that laps the island’s shores -- will open at the June Kelly Gallery on May 14. The works will remain on view through June 15.

The exhibition title, In the Same Path as the Sun, refers to a line in a popular poem about the Dominican Republic, “There is a Country in the World,” by Pedro Mir. It is also the title of his first two Water Paintings executed in the summer of 2004. “Those paintings,” says Valdez, “opened a new formal exploration of my painting process, in which I minimize the brushwork while creating a more fluid representation.”

“I continue to expand that exploration in these new paintings,” Valdez comments. “ I have been using very thin layers of richly pigmented oils, inks and acrylics over varied surfaces, such as rice paper on linen, Styrene Plastic and Mylar.”

Valdez’s paintings are aquatic theaters, the staging grounds for the artist’s reflections on his personal life and on the collective history of the Caribbean, where the water is a constant symbol of a Dominican’s exile from the wider world and at the same time his connection to it.

Valdez’s mystical reveries capture the allure of the light, the strength and the spatial ambiguity of the ocean. Its transparency and visual instability create an enthralling sense of isolation and shelter, freedom and yet threat. He gives us a world where nature and consciousness mingle, where the sensuality of the tropics meets the isolation of the island man, and where dreams of travel to distant lands are tempered by the powerful emotional bonds of home.

The exhibition is accompanied by a new monograph, Julio Valdez, with an essay by Federica Palomero, former chief curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas, Venezuela, and illustrations of many of his paintings.

Valdez was born in Santo Domingo and studied at Altos de Chavόn School of Design in La Romana, which is associated with Parsons School of Design, New York. He also studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo, and worked with printmakers Robert Blackburn and Kathy Caraccio in New York. He lives and works in New York City.

Valdez’s works have been shown in many one-person and group exhibitions in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, and Europe. His work is represented in numerous public, corporate and private collections, including El Museo del Barrio, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, CA.; Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University, New Jersey; Musée Grimaldi, Cagnes-Sur-Mer, France; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Museum of Modern Art, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Omar Rayo Museum, Roldanillo, Colombia; the Library of Congress and The World Bank, Washington, DC.

As a part of Main Street Takoma's first annual ART HOP, A.Salon hosts a group show for Art Hop participating artists. These artists include Karen Krueger ( also at Mayorga Coffee), Nicole Salimbene (also at The Culture Shop), Art for the People (also at The Electric Maid), James Colwell (also at Cedar Crossing), Fritie Seidler and Pamela Townsend (also at The Big Bad Woof), Shirley Thompson (also at Summer Delights), Amy Kincaid (also at The Stillpoint Mind and Body), Ricki Schneyer (also at Salon Jam), Kimberly Reyes (also at SP&A Beads), Joanna Axtmann (also at Roscoe's Neopolitan Pizzeria), Katja Toporski (also at Polly Sue's Vintage Clothing), Gwen Mazorow (also at Park Florists), Bobbi Kittner (also at The Olive Lounge and Grill), Sam Kittner ( also at Now and Then), Patti Mallin (also at Moonshadow Antiques), Eric Bond (also at Middle East Cuisine), Alison Baker (also at Mark's Kitchen), Rob Rudick (also at The Magic Carpet), Amy Maloney (also at House of Musical Traditions), Amy Abrams and Lawrice Dolan (also at Curves), Dilip Sheth (also at The Covered Market), Ken Gedling (also at Amano), Tuesday Winslow (also at TPSS Co-op), Jamie Downs (also at Bikram Yoga Takoma Park. Marcelle Fozard (Fair Day Play) and Nina Falk ( The Shampoo) were not able to participate in the group show but were featured in the event.

A.Salon was pleased to be a part of the event.

Concert - standing room only

The Mick Moloney and Athena Tergis concert at A.Salon last night was an amazing success. No surprises in Mick and Athena's performance. We expected perfection and we got it. Zan Macleod joined in to take some pressure off Mick and was exceptional. Mick's chest infection didn't seem to hurt his performance at all. Such a pro. He delivered even though he was still stuck in NYC in the airport with a canceled flight at 5 pm. By 8:15 he was on the stage and ready to go. Athena Tergis was everyones instant favorite. She has some arts coop in her background so a tour of A.Salon was a must. I truly have not heard a fiddle like that since Eugene O'Donnell. Such sensitivity and crisp clear tone - every single sound was intentional.

The DC folkies were out in force. We had standing room only even though this was a new venue.

David Eisner provided fantastic sound. You might think you don't need sound in an intimate setting, but David knew just what to do to help us differentiate between the triplets on the mandolin or bouzouki and the beautiful tone of the 5 string fiddle.

Even though Zan didn't know their set, he followed every subtle transition in the numerous Irish compilations. We all knew a lot more about NYC musical history by the end of the evening. "If it Wasn't for the Irish and the Jews."

Spring Members' Show in The Willow Street Gallery

The Spring show in The Willow Street Gallery features the works of numerous A.Salon members including: Marta Gutierrez, Robert Moore, Joren Lindholm, Sean Yates, Eric Schweitzer, Luis Scotti, Sherell Medberry, Maria Simonsson, Julio Valdez, Brent Futrell, Jamie Downs, Tuesday Winslow and Judy Goodman. The show will remain up through March and is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 3 and other times by appointment. The show will be open March 12th for the Mick Moloney and Athena Tergis concert and will be open the weekend of March 19-21 as part of the Takoma Art Hop, when a second show will feature the works of Art Hop participants.

A open art play time will also be featured during the Art Hop where children and their parents can produce art together for a donation of $5/hr.

The November Show at The Willow Street Gallery is Fine Crafts and Fashion and features several A.Salon artists. The gallery will be open additional hours through December. Diana Khoury, Karen Purifoy and Clintonia Chance will have fashions available for kids....in fur....etc. There will be mittens, fabric art pieces, paper works, candles and more. Following the November show will be more of a good thing - the Holiday Show featuring work priced under $250. The show will remain in the gallery until October 31. Luis Scotti and David Camero at Takoma Community Center

Luis Scotti and David Camero are showing at the Takoma Park Community Center. Luis is a shared studio member of A.Salon. His silk screen prints are shown with David Camero's delightful masks. Luis's prints are subtle in their technique and bold in their impact. Luis teaches silk screen at A.Salon. Look for his upcoming schedule starting in November. David's masks are whimsical and powerful. In this image he is standing in front of an altar that he presents in the gallery on the first floor of the community center at Maple and Philadelphia in Takoma Park. Next month Sherell Medbery, (A.Salon Studio 206) will be showing in the second floor gallery. Russian art will follow. Check out the galleries and exhibition cases at the center.

Call for Proposals - Exhibits

The Arts and Humanities Commission is seeking proposals from visual artists and craftsmen interested in exhibiting their work at the Takoma Park Community Center. If selected, the work would be exhibited in one of four galleries: the Atrium Gallery, the Richard Dempsey Memorial Gallery, Gallery Three or The Corridor. Exhibits may feature the work of a group of artists or craftsmen or the work of an individual.
